SOME LIKE IT HOT…..….
LONDON SCHOOL LEADS THE WAY WITH MAJOR CLIMATE CHANGE PROJECT
1 July 2009. More than 720 pupils from The Charter School in SE London are now planning a vast multi-media installation which will displayed in the school’s atrium from 20 July 2009, entitled – Some Like It Hot. The project has been part funded by the Prince’s Trust.
Pupils from The Charter School will be producing eight billboard size representations of climate change – from warming oceans to the use of reusable energy sources, a village of the future, as well as sculptures which will house sound recordings. A wide range of materials will be used to create the work including recycled paper and costumes and props from the National Theatre. Students will also be involved in undertaking scientific research to inform their interpretations, writing poetry and composing musical outcomes to highlight the issue.
Students from the City & Guilds School of London Art School will be assisting the pupils, as well as a range of professional writers, musicians and artists during the main construction week of 13 – 17 July.
Although the school only opened in 2000 it has well established green credentials. Ecowarriors amongst the pupils and staff recycle twice a week, the buildings are an award-winning project using brown water, green roofs, solar power and recycled materials.
“Climate change had long been an ongoing topic amongst our pupils both within lessons and in playground discussions. So an opportunity to create something to highlight such a crucial issue and then to showcase it both physically in our school but also electronically across the world was a chance too good to miss¿, commented David Sheppard, headteacher.
The Charter School’s installation ‘Some Like it Hot’ is the seed bed project for the Cool it Schools campaign. Cool it Schools, is a global climate change initiative that is inviting young people to get creative and help stop global warming. Some Like it Hot will be documented and then posted on the website – www.coolitschools.com. Coolitschools.com was launched on 3 June to create a worldwide bond between young people who care about climate change. They can learn about each other’s lives and become responsible and informed global citizens. It was conceived and developed by Jane Langley who is a professional artist, teacher and a Research Fellow at Goldsmiths, University of London, but also a parent of a child at The Charter School.
The Charter School’s project will then be followed by partner schools in the Amazon rain forest, Borneo, China and Ghana.
